Letter, 1855 May 5, Edgefield District (S.C.), to "Dear Sir."

Letter re antebellum gold mining industry in northern Georgia and in vicinity of Edgefield and McCormick Counties in S.C. Letter to unidentified recipient addressed as "Capt." [James Dorn?] in which Quattlebum discusses the stagnant market in Edgefield for "the gold business," reports his visit to the financially successful mining operation at Columbia Gold Mines (Columbus, Ga.) [now McDuffie County, Ga.], lamenting that he rushed into the business with insufficient planning, offering a ten percent commission if he made a cash sale, and specifying terms for leasing thirty-six acres to [Joseph] Slocum.
